Winter Skincare Survival 101

January 23, 2018

Oh, January! Resolutions are aplenty, yearly planning is in motion, and momentum is feeling positive…except, did we mention that it’s still freezing outside?! While winter weather *does* put us in the mood for extra cozy curl-up-on-the-couch-in-our-fave-sweats type of moments, there are certainly a few things we could do without…namely the dry, itchy skin that comes with the season.

If you’re in need of some serious skin salvation, read on for tips and tricks to survive the remaining cold weather months ahead.

Tip 1: Hydration, Hydration, Hydration. Water is your BFF!

We can’t say it enough! But, it totally makes sense. When the air is cold and dry, the air you breathe has less moisture in it – contributing to less water in your body.1 Even if you’re not feeling hot, sweaty, or thirsty, moisture loss in the winter is serious business. Make sure to drink plenty of liquids throughout the day. When your body is dehydrated, skin can feel the effects – your internal organs get first dibs on the water you consume, leaving skin out to dry.

Tired of plain ‘ole water? Make it fun and add a few slices of citrus fruit or cucumber to a pitcher – if anything, it may feel reminiscent of summer. No harm in that!

Tip 2: Dead skin cells, be gone!

Dehydrated, dry skin can lead to itchy, flakey symptoms. We think it’s best to keep those dead skin cells moving along their merry way, which is why exfoliating is key. Have you checked out our body scrubs? From Sea Salt to Espresso and Grapefruit to Sugar Cane, we’ve got plenty of options for ya! Pick out your favorite and add it to your routine for smooth, flake-free skin. Plus, all of our body scrubs are free from plastic microbeads, meaning that they do just as much good for our environment as they do good for your skin.

Tip 3: Limit hot showers.

As much as it feels good on frigid winter days, super-hot showers can actually contribute to drying skin out. Try to limit showers to 5-10 minutes, and use warm water rather than a temperature that turns your skin red. We also recommend switching to a deliciously hydrating body wash during the colder months, like our Alba Botanica® Very Emollient™ Bath & Shower Gels in either Herbal HealingCoconut RescueIsland Citrus, or Honey Mango. All formulas hypoallergenic and free from harsh sulfates. Plus it doesn’t hurt that a few of them smell like beachside bliss.

Tip 4: Up your lotion game!

That lightweight lotion left over from summer might not be cutting it right now. Maximum measures may need to be taken! Keep an eye out for lotions that include mega-moisture ingredients like Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Colloidal Oatmeal, or Coconut Oil. Our Very Emollient™ Body Lotion Maximum has been clinically proven to deliver 24 hydration-filled hours straight to your skin and is the holy-grail for helping relieve severely dry symptoms. Stock up and slather it on!

Tip 5: Don’t forget about your cute face!

Remember how we mentioned that we’re kind of living for those cozy couch moments while we wait out the weather? No better time for a face mask! An infusion of Coconut Water, Cucumber, and Chamomile Extracts make our Fast Fix™ Sheet Mask in Coconut Water Hydrate just the thing to pop on when wanting to restore skin to healthy, hydrated happiness. Each sheet mask is made with sustainably-sourced fiber, and is formulated with 100% vegetarian ingredients.

Stay warm out there, friends! Only 122 days left until summer…not that we’re counting or anything.
